Jai was previously Deputy Director of Regulatory Affairs for the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group.

Possessing a strong technical background, Jai is an ex sea going Chief Engineer who was overseeing Regulatory Compliance for the Maersk fleet internationally with a focus on MARPOL. He moved to Europe in early 2010 prior to which he was stationed in North America.

Jai has a global take on problem solving in addition to an extensive on-shore and sea going experience which he effectively uses to ‘bridge’ the gap between the ship and shore. Jai considers his integrity and credibility as essential skills when dealing with regulators & authorities, with whom he is widely networked, in addition to his excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Jai is a Fellow at the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) and a Chartered Engineer (UK). Additionally, he is Vice Chairman of the Board of Experts (BoE), Green Award Foundation.

EXPERIENCE

  • Participated in a round table of 15 persons on Green Transportation led by Canadian Minister of Transport the Honourable Marc Garneau (Montreal, June 2016)
  • Part of the Danish delegation to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the capacity of an Advisor for MEPC, MSC & PPR meetings
  • Implementation of new IMO fuel sulphur limits that came into effect 01 January 2015 for vessels whilst operating in designated Emission Control Area’s
  • Evaluated the impact of the USCG Ballast Water Regulations and provided input on compliance, especially with having vendors pushed to submit applications for USCG Type Approval as well as certification of their systems as AMS (Alternate Management Systems) for use in US waters
  • Reviewed the US EPA’s Draft Vessel General Permit 2.0 in order to assess the possible impact for the Maersk fleet. Additionally, provided input to Maersk US colleagues for commenting on the same to EPA
  • Reviewed California’s proposed Bio Fouling regulations and provided comments on possible amendments
  • Analyzed the New York Dept of Environmental Conservation’s 401 certification of the NPDES Program as affecting Maersk vessels and ensured that the relevant applications for extension were in place for the different Business units by 30 June 2010
  • Initiated the enrollment of Maersk’s Canadian Flagged vessels into Transport Canada’s Delegated Statutory Inspection Program in late 2009
  • Presentation on fuel switch initiatives made to Transport Canada & Shipping Federation of Canada in Montreal June 2009
  • Formulation and roll out of the US EPA’s NPDES program fleet wide covering approx 500 ships. This included providing support for queries raised by the ships crews in the implementation
  • Successful completion of the US DOJ Environmental Compliance Program
  • Presenter & participant on panel discussion on emission reduction at the USCG sponsored 2009 World Maritime Day Parallel Event in New York, NY
  • Speaker at the Ocean Innovation Conference 2009, Greener Ships – Bluer Waters in Victoria, BC
  • Input on effectively dealing with regulators
  • Made presentations on Regulatory Compliance at various Maersk Officers (sea going staff) seminars (Bucharest, Prague, Singapore)
  • Conducted Regulatory training sessions for Maersk office staff (Copenhagen & Singapore)
